MANGANESE REMOVAL IN DRINKING WATER SYSTEMS

2017-8-1 · The pH of the water is the most important parameter for manganese removal. Required levels of manganese removal occurred above a pH of 7.5. Pre pH adjustment was made using a 10% soda ash solution. The lowest manganese concentration of 0.026 mg/L was obtained at an initial pH of 8.3 (Test No.12). Alum addition decreased the pH to approximately 5.8.

Manganese exists naturally in some soils and enters into ground water or is washed down to surface water reservoirs. If not oxidised, manganese(II) ions will escape through water treatment processes into the supply system. Once in the system, the ion is gradually oxidised to insoluble manganic dioxide causing dirty water problems.
